The only female detective in the Miami PD's Homicide division, Joe Frye has memories that haunt her, and a past that not even her lover, detective Louis Kincaid, truly knows. It began when Joe was an ambitious rookie cop in a small Michigan town called Echo Bay. The bones found in the woods were the first clue in a string of unimaginably brutal murders of young women. Plunged into a heated investigation -- and caught between the dictates of a reluctant local sheriff and the state police -- Joe soon uncovers the chilling truth In the dead of winter in the Michigan woods, she must face down a predator who has chosen her as a worthy opponent -- or become his next victim.

I was glad, at first, to see this book is not really about Kincaid whom I don't like at all from the previous books. However, the fact he's not there does not help much the story. It's banal, the characters are flat and boring, even the monster serial killer.I wish they did not make references to astrology. They definitely do not know anything about the subject. And don't bother to research. They say "his Sun makes square with his Mercury and both are retrograde". First off, Sun is NEVER retrograde. Don't happen. Second - Mercury and Sun cannot make a square, the farthest Mercury can wander from Sun is 30 degree. Again, Mercury and Sun in square - don't happen, never ever. And it is not something of deep knowledge - it's basics of astrology.

A Thousand Bones (Audible Audio Edition) PJ Parrish Suzanne Toren Audible Studios Books Reviews
I have enjoyed all the books in this series and was disappointed that this was not a Louis Kincaid book. I find it easy to like Kincaid and think him an honorable man. While A Thousand Bones as a thriller is good, I was disturbed by the ending. Jo's choice of justice was simply wrong. I have to like the hero of the story and Jo's dishonorable decision makes that impossible for me. Just ask the agent who could not accept it either.
I like Parrish's books and will continue to read them. Let's hope the next one I do not have to throw against the wall in frustration when I am finished.
"A Thousand Bones" was my intro to P. J. Parrish's books. I loved it several years ago, lent the book, it disappeared, so I'm reading it again on . I think it's a well-balanced book, doesn't leave loose ends, moves quickly but doesn't leave the reader behind. Parrish's Louis Kincaid and Joe Frye are always portrayed as very human - enough flaws and self-doubt to be believable. Research is always good. My favorite author(s) by far.
Full with knowledge and excitement for the Kincaid followers, this time the story is woven from his true love's position. Never any slack from this (or these) author(s).
Kept me engaged completely, and the plot has enough turns to keep things interesting. The moral dilemma presented here, however, is the real accomplishment of the author. Tough subject handled thoughtfully without sugarcoating
I'd like to read more of the Louis Kincaid series. I enjoyed this one, my first (though it's book 8 of the series). It focuses on the titular character of the series' "lover," Joe, in a flashback to her youth in Michigan. I'd like to learn more about them in present-day Miami.
A number of years ago I read this book as a paperback. I loved it so much and leant to a friend who also enjoyed it. She asked if she could mail it to her daughter to read and I said yes. Unfortunately it got ruined enroute.
While I still prefer Louis Kinkaid over a novel having Joette Frye as the protagonist, I found it an intriguing novel.
She's a rookie cop in Michigan surrounded by the blue wall of the good old boys. Louis is almost non-existent in this story. But, it doesn't matter.
Being the rookie, Joe (Yes, it spelled that way), picks up a mentor. She struggles between her personal life and the capture of a serial killer.
Possibly halfway through, the reader know who the crazed killer is. That doesn't matter either. The struggles and intricate details of how to catch the killer keep this moving and interesting.
The last chapter and epilogue are very good and a fitting end to a very well done drama. The novel is well deserving of the reader's time.
I was glad, at first, to see this book is not really about Kincaid whom I don't like at all from the previous books. However, the fact he's not there does not help much the story. It's banal, the characters are flat and boring, even the monster serial killer.
